Malta is an archipelago located in the Mediterranean Sea which attracts tourists each and every year and I expect it to do the same again once COVID-19 passes, in this blog I wanted to share with you 10 things that you should not do in Malta, if you’re Maltese are watching then feel free to add to this list in the comment section below.
– Do not think that Malta is part of Italy.
Malta is located just south of Italy but it is not a part of Italy so the first one is do not think Malta is a part of Italy, there are two separate countries it’s as simple as that, this does not mean the Maltese have anything against the Italians but I’m sure you can understand that every nation wants their own identity, you’d be surprised how many people think Malta is a part of Italy.
– Do not worry about not being able to communicate in English.
Do not worry about not being able to communicate in English, Malta gained independence from the British Empire in 1964 so English is actually Malta’s official second language, it’s actually harder to find someone that doesn’t speak English so that should put your ease when trying to find your way around those beautiful islands.
– Do not expect to drive on the right-hand side of the road
Do not expect to drive on the right-hand side of the road Malta actually drives on the left-hand side of the road the same as in the UK, Malaysia, India and any other form of British colony, actually India’s not a good example they drive on any side of the road but you understand my point, most of the world drives on the right-hand side of the road so bear this in mind before you go and rent a car because I know it can be strange when you see everyone driving on the opposite side to which you are used to doing in your own country.
– Do not think Malta is an island only for partying.
Do not think that Malta is only a boozy partying island, it’s not. the main partying hotspot is Saint Julian’s Bay and there are other bars of nightclubs dotted around the island but there is so much more on offer, Malta has lots and lots of history, you can visit so many different UNESCO world heritage sites like Mdina, the former capital city also known as the silent city you can go on long scenic tricks around the coast, visit beaches fishing villages, boat tours you can take a boat to go zone explore there, go visit the Blue Lagoon Camino so there is so much more on offer than just partying.
– Do not be afraid to try Kinnie
Don’t be afraid to try Kinnie, the refreshing bittersweet orange soda drink that lots of people love but at the same time lots of people hates it I actually happen to love it and Malta is one of the only countries in the world that you can actually buy this on the shelves so go and buy it see what you think and make up your own mind as to whether you love it or you hate it and if you tried Kinnie let me know what you think of it in the comment section below.
– Do not think that Malta uses two pin plugs.
Do not think that more to use is the common two pin European plug adapter, Malta actually uses the three-pin plug adapter that uses in the UK so make sure you have the right plug adapter before you arrive in Malta, it’s going to be really frustrating for you if you get to your hotel and realize you can’t charge up your electronic devices.
– Do not expect to get anywhere quickly.
Do not expect to get anywhere quickly on the island of Malta especially during rush hour, Malta has a population of 500,000 people and it’s always increasing so there are a lot of cars on the road, have this in mind, set your alarm earlier and plan accordingly to avoid the crowds.
– Do not expect buses to be on time/stop for you.
This follows all nicely from the last tip do not expect buses to be on time and also do not expect them to stop for you because they might just drive past full up especially during peak season and rush hour, this has actually happened to me on many occasions so bear this in mind leave earlier to beat the rush hour before it starts before the locals have to go to work and leave to go back to your hotel after the day out after rush hour when things calm down a lot more.
– Do not forget to drink plenty of water.
Do not forget to drink plenty of water this needs to be said, Malta is a hot country which boasts over 300 days of sunshine every year not so many people are aware of how hot it actually can get there so you are going to need to stay hydrated while out exploring and if you are wondering whether or not it’s ok to drink tap water honestly some locals drink it but I personally would not drink it so you can buy bottled water or unless you have a water filter bottle which would be even better.
– Do not touch Prickly Pears.
And finally, do not pick prickly pears also known as Bajtar tax-xewk in Malta so all over the island you will see these interesting cool looking fruits attached to the cacti and you might be tempted to pick them but do not think about it, don’t even think about touching it because they called prickly pears for a reason and you will get the spike stuck in your fingers and it will not be pleasant for you so just don’t do it.
so these are 10 Things Not to Do in Malta, I hope you enjoyed reading this guide.
